Two obvious possibilities that went unmentioned: (1) An irresistible children's toy; (2) A way to non-violently lure wild elephants allowing capture. This is a model of a baby, life size, and elephants are curious animals. It would work.

Though Dhaulagiri is described as an ancient center of Buddhism, a contemporary religious movement called Jainism was also present at around that time (200 BCE).

The Udayagiri and Khandagiri Caves in the city of Bhubaneswar, not far from Dhaulagiri, were used by Jain ascetics at around 200 BCE. Perhaps Jainism too could merit a mention in the article.
