Fascinating. I assume the closer proximity one acquires to this type of gamma producing phenomena, the less likely there is of biological life.
Even our location is anything but safe, actually. Discoveries are being revealed at a dizzying rate, and the chances of earth being in line of something akin to a gamma burst, is strangely more likely than not.
The sheer quantity of planet sterilizing factors all around us seem to be held at arm's length. But there is no "force field" around this planet which protects us. Comfortably, these incredibly energetic objects are identified and published.
The average human has no concept of what it would mean if a minor incident were to reach us. Even very minor might mean the dissolution of this race, and planet wide biology.
