Archaeologists in England have found up to 25 large pits dotting the countryside, but their purpose remains a mystery.

When found near streams these holes could have been for accumulating water, especially since an animal was found in one. But those people could have not only used them to collect rain and run-off in places with out streams nearby, but have built their homes over them, which have long since disappeared. Reaching down through a hole in the floor for a nice cool drink!
