From unusually quiescent to possibly lethal, our sun affords biological life to flourish, but also can be responsible for a partial or total extinction.
What we witness now is not "normal". In fact, it isn't entirely known whether or not this has taken place in prehistoric times, to the chagrin of ancient humans.

Very strange that, apart from shrinking Scotland significantly, and a few more very minor discrepancies, the shape, and orientation of this "hole" is an excellent depiction of the outline of the British Isles. Cornwall, Wales, East Anglia, the Wash, the south coast and several other areas are shaped just as clearly as I could draw them from memory.
