Ben Turner... Please explain to me exactly what the phrase "at a distance three times closer than Mercury." means. Does it mean 1/3rd the distance ? If so then why not say that? "Three times closer" is a meaningless statement!

David Machholz first spotted the eponymous comet in 1986 using a homemade cardboard telescope.
That is actually amazing.
Definitely needed more info on that.
