Yes, of course they had to kill it. I knew immediately when I read the first sentence that said "the gigantic animal measured" (past tense). I'll never understand the human compulsion to possess, torture, and kill animals for selfish amusement, i.e. hunting and fishing. Then these people always pose in pictures with their kill with big smiles on their face like they did something noble. Totally disgusting and classless. Thank God I'm not one of these people.
