Don't be silly, Space has no smell, there's nothing to smell. What they are smelling is the H2 that outgasses from bare aluminum in a vacuum when it combines with the air they pump into the airlock. The H combines with N2 and creates NH3 (ammonia) this reacts with the space suit and also some metals in the airlock, being a PH of ~12 it tends to burn the surface a bit creating the burnt metal smell. God! I thought we had smart people we send into space..
