Interesting! Ideally, the necessity of shielding would be minimal, if all of the emitted radiation would be used as an energy source. So, by increasing the efficiency, one would reduce the need for shielding. You'd still need to take into account accidental damage, of course.

I think technology like this definitely has potential!

The article title says "50 years without recharging" but this is misleading as that power source isn't rechargeable.
Having said that, it's a great little piece of engineering.
