Nuclear fusion reactor in UK sets new world record for energy output

Encouraging. But at the rate things happen with [at least] this tokamak any efficiently-produced energy will probably be too little, too late to be significant in defeating global warming. One seeming possibility would be to run the new one in France enough to sell energy and help defray costs, possibly moving the schedule up.

"final tests yielded 69.26 megajoules of heat from just 0.21 milligrams of fuel — the equivalent of burning 4.4 pounds (2 kilograms) of coal. This is more total energy — though not more net positive energy — than any other fusion reaction has produced thus far." -- The key to successful use of fusion is to produce net positive energy. So, this is work-in-progress without an end in sight.

I hope that fusion will be viable within the next few decades. Until then, we can use modern fission tech as a bridge technology to combat climate change.
