Crocodiles are covered in scales, live in water and mud and don't use their fore limbs when they dine but that isn't a good reason to presume a lot of other things about them. I assume that they are probably more intelligent than they need to be because survival in a changing world for tens of millions of years requires that they be smarter than they need to be at any given time. I think they may have a slew of feelings and thoughts that we have no clue about. In a thousand years we may know much more about them than we do now. Think about what we've learned about ourselves in the last thousand years.

The observation that the crocodiles were nudging it away from the pack may be mistaken. They might have been trying to use it as bait to lure the other dogs in. The other dogs probably didn't want to enter the water because they'd been attacked before and the crocodiles thought we'll use this one to gain their trust for a bigger meal some time in the future. cats do that but only when they're already full.
