The 8008 processor was based on the architecture of the Datapoint 2200. The 2200 was the first to put the keyboard, display, processor and mass storage in a single unit. I base these remarks on the fact that I taught the 2200 processor to the gate level at Datapoint's Field Service Training Center in San Antonio, TX, and am personally acquainted with the original designers of the processor.

Intel was not able to put the 2200 on a chip at the time of the original discussions, but retained the design. Apart from the input/output instructions, the 2200 and the 8008 were instruction compatible.
