Why does the moon turn red during a total lunar eclipse?

There might be a little more to this, than just the scattering filter effect. Our atmosphere has a density gradient. A density gradient can bow light, bending and turning(focusing) more light than would be in a normal shadow.

The earth's atmosphere could be acting like a filtered lens.....for long(red-orange) light.
