I was told thermodynamics indicates chicken came first, but if you consider evolution of species, an egg should have been first, from a different species that preceded chicken.

Technically speaking, the first encapsulated female gamete was the first egg.

A gamete is a reproductive cell of an animal or plant. In animals, female gametes are called ova or egg cells, and male gametes are called sperm. Ova and sperm are haploid cells, with each cell carrying only one copy of each chromosome. During fertilization, a sperm and ovum unite to form a new diploid organism.

The chicken came first according to the principle of cause and effect. Egg is the effect of the cause, the hen. Effect is the result of the cause, hence, since egg is the effect of the cause, the hen, it follows that chicken came first in time then the egg. CAUSE AND EFFECT

No, the egg came first.
The egg that contained the first chicken was laid by a bird that was not a chicken.
The chick in that egg (the first chicken) was either a mutation or a hybrid of the mother bird.
