If humankind insists on placing habitats on the surface of Mars, this entire venture could be short-lived.
The moon is one thing, Mars is another. It isn't an earthlike narrative where carelessness can be remedied.
Everything must be subsurface. Even the launch facility must be protected underground. One impact in close proximity will, if not completely, destroy and severely damage aboveground structures. There is no stopping space material from quickly entering the atmosphere and wreaking havoc.
