Question What is in those containers on the top of the towers around rocket launch sights build ( I assume for lightening protection) and how does it work?

Thanks for Hayseed your reply..... Yes, I am sure those are there for lightning protection,
BUT the question remains "Wouldn't just a simple lightning rod on top of those towers do? "
Could those cylinders be - for some strange reasons - filled with water or something??
 
The only thing I can think of is that they are using the structures for measurement too. Might be measuring charge field in air. In that case, maybe some surface area is needed to sense it.

Everyone is using it - Chinese, Russians, Japanese, Europeans ...... I think that to measure static charge could be done at the ground level too - having a wire connected at the top...
