What could drive humans to extinction?

I think they missed the obvious and most likely way humanity goes extinct - they kill the sea. Only a few people are watching the current decimation of the world's oceans play out - most people do not even realize we could be less than 30 years from a complete collapse of almost all species in the oceans if commercial fishing continues at its current level. Most folks don't even know that over half the plastic in the ocean is from commercial fishing nets and equipment - they think it is from straws and paper bags - it is from commercial fishing. Some species have fallen so low they cannot even be commercially fished - cod for example. A sinble Blue Fin Tuna sold for over a million dollars on the docks in Japan. But we keep increasing the size of the commercial fishing fleet - and lets be clear without a viable fish population everything else in the ocean dies - and we get - most of the oxygen that sustains the world from the life in the oceans - not the land. The ocean sequesters 10 times the amount of carbon as the land - so we either die from a lack or oxygen or an excess of CO2. Take you pick, we could be looking at a collapse in our lifetime - and basically no one is even watching the tiger sneak up behind us.

There will always be survivors of pandemics. There will always be survivors of climate change, dead seas, and rogue AI. We can and will adapt if necessary. These threats are only possibilities, not sure things. More than any other species.....we will adapt and survive. No matter what happens here.

But we will not adapt and survive a planet killing collision. The real danger from extinction comes from space. The pitiful thing about it, is that we have the tech to detect and mitigate such an event. But the most educated are the most ignorant and nothing will be done. They are occupied with meaningless concerns, compared to the actual threat.

Educated ignorance will be our demise.

"The Ends of the World" by Peter Brannen. The book is a level set; it may require 2 or 3 readings to get the full context. Certainly, such is a better option than the hand wring, projection, wishful thinking and delusion expressed by some above.
