That's one of the fun (and admittedly frustrating) things about science - just when you think you have things all figured out the evidence comes along and gives you a whammy like this. Kudos to the scientists for having the imagination and good sense to consider this finding and not just dismiss it because it doesn't fit a certain orthodox view. A good scientist always goes where the evidence leads and not the other way around.
