I'm no professional but it seems to me like this was a way of keeping live people from getting in there. Thinking either he had some very contagious disease or illness that he died of - although I did see the thing that said there was no sign of disease on his bones - or maybe he went mentally crazy. Perhaps rabies.

I think there has always been the hope that the evil bastards will stay dead and not be reincarnated. This is an example of an attempt to lock the spirit of a horrible person into the grave. And now they've gone and let it out! Oh, no!
