This is most interesting since I was of the impression that planetary magnetic fields (of which Mars has none) created "Bow Shock". Apparently, whatever receives the solar wind, be it atmosphere, magnetism, or just the planetary surface, is what generates the solar bow-shock' effect.
Which points out why Terraforming Mars is going to be nearly impossible—unless we somehow manage to re-establish a planetary magnetosphere around Mars, any atmosphere we generate will just be blown away by the solar wind...and also demonstrates that the only thing that makes Earth habitable is our own magnetic field.
