Microbes that feast on crushed rocks thrive in Antarctica's ice-covered lakes

An interesting topic but not one that can help much with extra-terrestrial life. This is simply because cellular life elsewhere (like life here) had to go through a long evolutionary history that would require exposure on land and in surface waters to DNA damaging solar UV radiation to reach the level of methanogens, methylotrophs and others dependent on photosynthetic life at the surface.
