Meteors more massive than the dinosaur-killing asteroid struck Earth 800 million years ago

Could similar meteor showers, but of lesser intensity, account for the "great extinctions" during some of the Earth's past geological periods? e.g.: the Permian, the Cretaceous, etc. Have any speculations/correlations been suggested by the data of 800-700mya? The above article would seem to indicate repeating implications for the Earth. An excellent study and analysis.
