48 days? Meh. I don't find this particular story to be very compelling.

Since hosts (e.g. humans) cause viral mutations, not viruses themselves, and since I haven't seen any researcher or 'specialist' comment on the possibility that the mutations could have happened inside the Nevada man's own cells, I am taking this story with a grain of salt.

The person from Hong Kong who was infected again reportedly tested negative for neutralizing antibodies between infections. A good B-cell memory and T cell ramp-up the second time explain why he did succumb to some viral replication but not one that was serious enough to even cause symptoms.

If the guy from Hong Kong could have a second but asymptomatic infection, I strongly suspect that the guy from Nevada had some other immunocompromise going on (Diabetes II? Blood Pressure? Maybe just a weight problem?).

We definitely need a lot more empirical data before we surrender to abject fear.
