The written history of Native Americans is about a post-apocalyptic society. Prior to Columbus Native American societies were a peace with one and another, for the most part, and had relatively rapid transportation of goods. Horses left by Columbus could have easily been transported across the Americas as fast as they could be bred and led. The first horse in the northern east coast area of the U.S. could have arrived within a year of contact with Columbus using the established trade routes. That would require direct transport of the individual horse and not by propagation.
