Consider the probability that the matrix of chemical, physical, environmental and biological conditions that existed to produce H. Sapiens might in some way happen to produce an alien species that could communicate with us and vice versa.
As there are trillions of galaxies providing seemingly countless star systems, the probability is rather high that intelligent life has arisen on a number of occasions. The issue of "communicate with us and vice versa" is certainly a major problem, to put it mildly.
We will not be communicating with distant civilizations, it would seem, unless they visit us. Just a few thousand light years apart could make all the difference. Someone might send a signal, but not be around to receive a reply, "and vice versa". Wars of extinction, viral pandemics, alien invaders from space, major impactors, massive volcanism, intense gamma ray bursts, etc., etc. You just never know.............stuff happens.
After all,
H. sapiens have only been able to do this for 100 years or so, with the radio, a trifling period. And how long we will last is not clear, but not likely millions of years. (The extreme frailty of life is not considered by many.) So being in the same time-frame of evolution, so to say, presents another major problem.
"No Way Jose" certainly ranks high on the list with having a chat, much less visitation.
