Wax build up happens a lot when older. This incident happened to me when swimming at local council swimming pool. Needed to get it flushed - uncomfortable to say the least.

If wax builds up and hardens, it takes 4-5 days with drops to soften the wax before flushing occurs. Very uncomfortable feeling - can throw a person off balance. Also, affects hearing itself.
