We might never know the complete function of the cosmos. I'm out universe it seems counterintuitive that something would double with every possible interaction since most things seem to be conserved on a basic level and that seems wasteful to say the least. But who knows if some type of multiverse exists and we're but a small part of that, it may follow rules that have nothing in common with what we observe in our tiny corner of it. Maybe once we figure out things like quantum gravity and what dark matter is it may shine some light on new physics that can make better guess on what may be out there.
