Alzheimer's disease and dementia in general are tricky. The medical community has, for decade, been trying to make a dent in understanding brain diseases. The research is not there to support most of the generalizations floating around about what might prevent or curtail the progression of this group of diseases and conditions. On the other hand, if you were to visit a loved one in dementia care, would you rather see that person playing a game with others or working a crossword puzzle, or sitting in a group watching TV news? Care and treatment at this point is so much about quality of life. Any actual gains in cognitive acuity can be considered a plus.
