The burping behavior of BHs shouldn't be too difficult to figure out. When a BH ejects material into intergalactic space, this phenomenon reduces the overall gravity in the vicinity of the center of the BH, which shuts down its feed. But since gravity propagates by the inverse square law (G=4πr²), material which is more distant from the BH center, but still on a vector towards the interior, is not affected as much as the material closer in, so the BH develops a cyclic feeding pattern.
