The biggest bang for the bucks is likely the National Geographic Dual LED Student Microscope.

It offers stereo viewing at 20X and 50X. While you won't see any bacteria with this scope, the 3-D imaging and range of viewable objects offers an enormous learning experience for kids of all ages.

The optics are likely decent, and will allow you to look at many cool things. And in 3-D, something you cannot do with a compound microscope.

Bugs are at the top of the list. You will not believe how intricate those little critters are. At 20X and 50X, you will get a chance to know them a whole lot better. For some, perhaps better than you care to know them!
