Perhaps this man from the Dark Ages may just have wanted his faithful, companion horse to be cared for and remain alive as opposed to some delusional grave goods, next life ritual? Yeh! my sympathy 1400 years later is with the horse who suffered such a gruesome death. Those of us who have horses shudder at such ritual cruelty.
