Why vitamin C won't 'boost' your immune system against the coronavirus

Totally - I mean just to start: What is the common cold? See this blog post I wrote on the topic 5 years ago. Needs updating, for sure.

Why vitamin C won't 'boost' your immune system against the coronavirus

There is a combination of scientific evidence, medically-relevant information, evidence from practice, and bureaucracy all at play when dealing with interactions with MDs. Each MD has their own set of these variables to contend with to treat a patient. Because of this, many (but not all) MDs...

Why vitamin C won't 'boost' your immune system against the coronavirus

Kidney stones are documented in at least two (possibly three) studies in association with vitamin C supplementation. However, that doesn't say why kidney stone risk goes up. My guess is that it's not the vitamin C that's the problem, it just exposing a problem that already exists.

Why vitamin C won't 'boost' your immune system against the coronavirus

There is potential harm from increased risk of kidney stones. Not a frequent occurrence, but still possible. Also some people still get abdominal issues even at 1000 mg / day. I would like to see any papers that suggest 5000 mg is optimal for macrophage function in humans. As far as I know...

Why vitamin C won't 'boost' your immune system against the coronavirus

This is a bit of an overstatement about what vitamin C can do. The immune system can function and the interferon is still produced with low levels vitamin C, it is just terribly inefficient. There are other factors in the body that have functional overlap with vitamin C (I think glutathione was...

High dose Vitamin C is being used by Doctors in New York

The problem is that 1500 mg of intravenous vitamin C is a pretty small dose. If it turns out not to work (or only works partially), we won't know if its because vitamin C isn't that effective or if they gave too little.

    Taking Vitamin C

You can't call it a "cure". There is absolutely no evidence for this. However, if vitamin C were to help, it would be better to take it before symptoms develop. Take more if symptoms appear.

Why vitamin C won't 'boost' your immune system against the coronavirus

First, I agree with everything you said in your post except for one small point: We don't know how IV vitamin C works yet. High dose vitamin C has a very peculiar duality - it can not only act as an antioxidant but it can also work as an oxidant (see the work with IV vitamin C in cancer)...

Why vitamin C won't 'boost' your immune system against the coronavirus

Certainly, Klenner's work is something that needs to reproduced... but with rigor. Klenner claimed a lot, but produced very little scientific evidence. He mostly worked with IV vitamin C - not oral. There's is a big difference. I don't discount your experience - these phenomena need to be...

    Taking Vitamin C

I won't argue with your treatment plan - that is your opinion. However, your requirement to have "natural raw material" vitamin C is not borne out by science.

Why vitamin C won't 'boost' your immune system against the coronavirus

Vitamin C is fairly benign - nobody has ever died from vitamin C over-consumption. Based on rat studies, the toxic dose is likely over 11g/kg body weight. So, maybe 700,000 mg per day? That doesn't mean high vitamin C intake doesn't have side effects. Gas, bloating, nausea, and diarrhea are...

Why vitamin C won't 'boost' your immune system against the coronavirus

A couple quick comments: There are NO published clinical trials on IV vitamin C and coronavirus(es). The trials in China are ongoing, so it's hard to say things are working until you apply a proper scientific analysis (again, press releases are not scientific evidence) Do I want the studies on...

Why vitamin C won't 'boost' your immune system against the coronavirus

I am a vitamin C researcher. I know the science well, enough to say that there's much out there we don't understand. I will agree with anyone who says we need more study, but disagree with anyone who knows how it works for everyone. I will gladly agree with EternalFlame79 on personal health...

Why vitamin C won't 'boost' your immune system against the coronavirus

I don't buy in to the author's initial title by any means. Just using that language implies some uselessness in vitamin C supplementation. I guess it gets more clicks than "We really wish we knew what was going on with vitamin C and COVID-19"

Why vitamin C won't 'boost' your immune system against the coronavirus

I did indeed. And nowhere in that small letter (not a clinical trial) did Dr. Hemila suggest that vitamin C does kill coronavirus or suggest how it should be used. He did say, however, that "it warrants further study" and I completely agree. I want more clinical trials more than anything!
