Ask Me Anything Ask Us Anything! Brian Hare & Vanessa Woods discuss why survival of the fittest is overrated

Is there a way to teach kids in school about this concept? When I was younger, we were pretty much always taught to compete and think of our own futures. Is there a way to sort of balance that out with an emphasis on being friendlier throughout life?

Would you ever volunteer to go to space, if you knew you'd never come back?

My problem is the travel/ journey time. I'd need some sort of constant video or facetime thing to stay perpetually in contact with the folks back on Earth. Of course, that's hard to guarantee considering I'll likely be travelling very far, but i'm definitely gonna gripe about it to whoever's in...

How To How Does a Particle Accelerator Work?

Incredible. This is exactly the sort of thing that stops me in my tracks. I focus so much on the process of particle collisions that it's worth stopping and noting how wild it is that we even have the ABILITY to do this!

Question Does it matter if we're on digital devices too often?

I mean, sure, it's bad for your health in ways. But, if we're advancing consistently so that every bit of our lives is dependent on digitisation, does it matter?

Ah yes, quantum mechanics and its unrelenting capacity for shaking our scientific foundations. Personally, I don't mind a sort of blanket subjectivity!

Question Did Google end its military support program?

If I'm being generous, I'd say they'd need to at least ride out the rest of their current agreement to actually stop working with DoD. But, I'm not generous. So, I'm gonna assume they are 100% still working with the DoD for the foreseeable future.

Question Wanted: companion robot. Predict the date!

Affordable? Probablyyyyyy 40-50 years. I'd say around that time. In terms of an actual viable product, the way you've described...sheesh. I'd be shocked if we don't see it before 2022. And even THAT is a bit of a conservative estimate!
